Matwork classes
Joseph Pilates devised a series of around 34 matwork exercises known as the ‘Full Mat’. These exercises have been broken down into more simplified versions and can be made much more challenging by adding variations and increasing levers.
Matwork classes are very popular and are run at Flex Studios in five different levels. Level 1 is suitable for members new to Pilates or for those who have not practiced Pilates for some time. These classes are also suitable for first time exercisers, however, if being referred by a practitioner or due to injury, we advise some 1:1 sessions prior to joining a group class.
The levels progress in order of difficulty, Level 5 being the most physically demanding and incorporating exercises from the original ‘Full Mat’.
All levels of classes will include the use of small equipment (all supplied by Flex Studios) to encourage correct muscle use and to help members progress to higher level classes. Members may only advance to other levels by an evaluation by one of Flex Studios’ instructors. Clients’ needs will be individually met according to any information disclosed on the membership health questionnaire.
Studio sessions
Studio sessions incorporate exercises and the use of all small equipment used in group matwork classes but also include the use of specialist Pilates machines. The reformers and cadillacs, as originally designed by Joseph Pilates, use springs to add resistance to exercises and can also provide assistance where necessary.
These machines can enhance members’ sessions by increasing their strength and flexibility, helping them to progress further in their matwork. During a studio session, there are no more than three members to each instructor. One hour slots are available and an individual exercise plan will be put in place for each member’s needs. Prior to starting a studio session, experience and knowledge of the basic Pilates principles is required. This can be attained either by attending a Level 1 matwork class or by arranging a 1:1 session at the studio.
1:1 sessions
1:1 sessions are suitable for anyone who would like a personal session with an instructor. Even though at Flex Studios class numbers are kept to a minimum and supervision and support is key, members may prefer a one-hour private session. Prospective members with a medical history are advised to ask an instructor at the studio with regards to class suitability. Any guest or member being referred by a medical practitioner, will require at least one 1:1 session to determine a suitable route to take in devising a suitable rehabilitation programme. These 1:1 sessions may be mat or machine based, depending on the client’s needs and goals.

Instructors at Flex Studios are happy to liaise with chiropractors, osteopaths, physiotherapists and other health professionals to devise a suitable Pilates programme. |
